Ital Vegetarian Entrees

Many Jamaican dishes have meat or fish, but Ital cuisine is usually vegetarian or vegan. Developed by Rastafarians, Ital food is a natural way of cooking that tries to avoid processed food and additives.

  • Ital Stewed Peas (red kidney beans cooked in coconut milk with Jamaican seasoning)
  • Vegetable Rundown (vegetables in a classic stew dish cooked in coconut milk and Jamaican flavorings)
  • Callaloo Rundown (callaloo in a classic stew dish cooked with Jamaican flavorings)
  • Cho-Cho or Okra Rundown (cho-cho or okra in a classic stew dish cooked with Jamaican flavorings)
  • Broad or butter beans & pepper stew
  • Coconut Potato Callaloo
  • Brown stewed tofu with string beans (fresh tofu lightly fried, then simmered in tasty brown sauce)

  • Stew peas with pig’s tail (pieces of pig’s tail steeped in a variety of tangy seasonings and slow cooked with red peas and brown sauce)
  • Stewed Cow foot (pieces of cow foot steeped in a variety of tangy seasonings and slow cooked in a combination of vegetables and brown sauce)
  • Chicken foot soup (chicken feet bone broth made with potatoes, turnips, carrots and Jamaican seasoning; can include the chicken feet)
  • Mannish Water (goat soup made from various goat parts; It is believed to be an aphrodisiac)
  • Fried liver (Breaded liver, fried in Jamaican flavorings; can be cow or chicken)
  • Chicken gizzards
  • Peppered Crayfish (Freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters; usually prepared with the head and scales).
  • Curried conch (meat of snails prepared in a mild or spicy curry sauce)
